Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Held Over Through Dec. 5
Attic Salt Theatre Company, the Producers of the currently running Tony-award winning comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, are proud to announce that said show will be held over for an additional weekend, due to audience demand and sold out houses. The show will continue to be performed at 35below, located at 35 East Walnut St in Downtown Asheville. The additional performances will be Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm, from December 3rd through the 5th. Seating in the black box theater will be general admission and tickets are limited, with all tickets costing $20.00. They can be purchased through the Asheville Community Theatre box office at ashevilletheatre.org or call 828-254-1320.
Attic Salt Theatre Company is the team who produced 2013’s comedy hit All in the Timing, 2014’s acclaimed God of Carnage and this summer’s smash The Underpants, but the producers have been overwhelmed by the response to Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.
Producer and Attic Salt Theatre Company co-founder Marci Bernstein says, “Any theater company hopes for the reception we’ve gotten from both critics and audiences. But it’s never expected and a joy when it’s received.”
Having always been a fan of the works of Christopher Durang, Director Jeff Catanese was nonetheless similarly awed by the reception and sold-out houses. “Durang’s works are crowd-pleasers, but often geared to very specific theatergoers. That the themes of the script, the acting of the cast and the venue itself have been pretty universally praised was totally surprising. I’m very proud of this show and so excited that even more of Asheville’s theater patrons will get to see it.”
The plot revolves around Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia as they live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up. Their peace is shattered when their sister Masha, an aging movie star, returns with her young boy-toy, Spike. Rivalries are sparked and regrets are voiced. Oh, and their clairvoyant cleaning woman may or may not have predicted the whole weekend.
“Best Play” Awards won by Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike won include the 2013 Tony Award Outer Circle Critics Award, Drama League Award, Drama Desk Award, New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Production, and the Off-Broadway Alliance Award.
The cast is made up of local favorites Adam Arthur, Jane Hallstrom, Christy Montesdeoca and Henry Williamson, and also features relative newcomers to the Asheville stage Amanda Hunt and Josephine Thomas. The play is directed by Jeff Catanese, who helmed Attic Salt Theatre Company’s All in the Timing, Women and Wallace, God of Carnage and The Underpants.
