Terpsicorps, Asheville's Cutting-edge Ballet Company, Presents "The Elements"

Terpsicorps, the unconventional professional ballet company that delights Asheville with vivid cutting-edge dance, brings you the world premiere of THE ELEMENTS.  Appearing in its finished version at the Diana Wortham Theatre in Asheville on June 25-27, 2015, and showcasing celebrated international dancers, choreographer Heather Maloy’s newest creation will be the culmination of a performance in progress.

Every weekday during the first three weeks of June this work will be coming to life in front of a live audience on the outdoor stage in downtown Asheville’s beautiful Pack Square Park.
Long time collaborator and photographer Zaire Kacz created an incredible series of work with a couple of last season’s Terpsicorps dancers. The second Maloy saw the images, the plan for this season’s show and rehearsal location came to life. The images evoke fire, water, clouds and the unknown. “We will create THE ELEMENTS, in the elements!” The Water section will have wet dancers and be wet on stage for times when the company is forced to rehearse in the rain, and the heat will be a daily inspiration for Fire. Brace yourself for flying and stilt dancing in the Air section and sensual earth goddesses being born from the dirt in the Earth section. Videographer Betsy Pearl Cardwell will be documenting the ups and downs of the creative process to be shown as a part of the culminating performance.
For the past thirteen years, Terpsicorps has brought in critically acclaimed professional dancers from across the US and abroad to perform for Asheville audiences during the summertime.  For those who haven’t heard, this has been a year of challenges for the company. Due to their landlord’s inability to keep his property up to the city’s requirements, Studio Terpsicorps had to shut its doors. This was not just a loss of rehearsal space for the critically acclaimed pillar of Asheville’s art scene, but a loss of income as well. The company is actively pursuing a new space, but in the meantime, Maloy is turning an obstacle into an opportunity. “Why not take to the streets to let the community know of our plight?” she says, “Literally!”  And the outdoor rehearsal plan was born.  Don’t miss the culmination of this unconventional rehearsal process!
